Babies change and develop at a such rapid rate, which is why baby photos are so important to capture every little detail. Whether they are taken by yourself or by a professional newborn photographer, they are all equally as important. Capturing wonderful memories for you to treasure long after your little one has grown. But what can I, as a Sussex-based baby photographer, offer you that your mobile snaps can’t?
Experience, essentially. My studio near Horsham has been open since 2011 and in that time I have captured many precious moments from baby bumps through to first year celebrations and beyond. As a mum myself, and having worked with many children of all ages, I have a few tricks to get the best from your babies. I know the best camera angles to use and the best lighting. Not to mention plenty of patience! Resulting in amazing Sussex baby photos.
Newborn Baby Photos
Taken during their first few precious weeks, newborn photography is an art involving calming techniques, posing expertise – where your baby’s safety is always paramount – and lots of patience to ensure you are rewarded with outstanding portraits of your little one. Sessions take place in my comfortable purpose-built studio, not too far from Billingshurst, where you have access to a good selection of props, hats, wraps and blankets to compliment your baby’s natural beauty. All helping create your wonderful Sussex baby photos. It is a relaxed, unhurried experience, and is totally baby-led. Take some time out and watch me work whilst you help yourself to the tea, coffee and snacks I have available for you.
I always include family portraits in a newborn session. These images are so important, to capture you together as a new family. Something that is much harder to do yourself with a self -timer. New parents tend to love sibling shots with their newborn baby but are not always keen to be in the picture themselves. However, I always encourage at least one portrait as these images are not just your memories, but they are your newborn’s memories too.

Milestone Baby Photos
But I don’t just photograph newborns. I also capture portraits of older babies in my Milestone sessions. Parents often ask when is the best age to take older baby photos. This definitely has to be the sitter stage, when your baby is sitting confidently but not yet on the move. And that brings plenty of opportunities to pose them sitting in our vintage baskets, bowls and tub. These sessions are such fun and full of laughter. They focus on capturing the personality of your little ones! Based near Crawley, my baby photoshoots are always so much fun.
With all my baby photography Mum or Dad are just out of shot to keep a watchful eye on their little ones. Although, if you would like to be in the portraits too then of course we can include these. Just let me know when you book in and I am happy to take a few family pictures as well. In fact, if you have time, take a read through my blog on the importance of being in portraits. If you are feeling a little unsure, this may just change you mind!
Cake Smash Photos
So what is a Cake Smash? It is a relatively new style of family photography, but certainly one that’s become increasingly popular. It’s a trend that started in the USA and it’s pretty much what is sounds like. A big fun, cakey, smashing mess all captured in amazing images. Whether they eat it, smash it, sit in it or throw it, cake-covered fingers, toes and messy little faces are such a joy to capture. I have to say, I love being a cake smash photographer. It’s always such good fun.
Each session is individually styled, based on your choice of colour scheme. Cake smash photography sessions usually last around one to two hours depending on your little one. They include pre-smash portraits, the smash itself and a splash session at the end. The styling props, outfit and handmade cake are all provided for you. It’s guaranteed that you will walk away from the session with some wonderful memories and images to share with your child as they grow up.
What could be better than celebrating your baby’s first birthday than with the unique experience of a fun portrait and birthday cake smash and splash session? Come to my studio near Haywards Heath to enjoy a super fun cake smash photoshoot.
Watch Me Grow
Can’t decide which type of Sussex baby photos are your favourite? Me neither. Want them all? My Watch Me Grow package is made for you. Combining all three sessions, it is the perfect way to capture your little one’s first few days, months and year.
The Watch Me Grow package includes:
- The newborn session – capturing your precious new baby in their first few weeks.
- The sitter session – for when your little one is sitting confidently and not yet on the move.
- The cake smash & splash – a super fun way to celebrate your little one’s first year.
Images from each session will also compliment each other so that they can be displayed together.
Maternity Photos
Of course, baby’s journey starts long before they are even born.
Why are maternity photos important? Pregnancy is probably one of the most special times in a woman’s life; full of anticipation, excitement, surprises and wonder. You are at the beginning of an amazing journey and I encourage every pregnant woman to consider a photoshoot with a maternity photographer.
The best time to have a maternity portrait is when you’re between 28-36 weeks. This is an ideal time when your baby bump is really showing but not so late that we risk a trip to the hospital mid-session! It should also mean that you are still at a stage where you feel fabulous, and moving and posing for your portraits is comfortable.
I have beautiful dresses and fabrics for you to use. So, other than underwear, you don’t need to worry about a thing.
Your maternity shoot can take place in the relaxed environment of our studio or on location. Why not take advantage of our stunning natural backdrops? We have so many to chose from in Sussex and Surrey. On the beach near Worthing or in the woods around West Sussex. Wherever you choose, we make sure that it is the perfect location for you. Partners and children are more than welcome to join you for the session, as this such a precious time for your growing family.
