All seasons have their own unique beauty but Autumn has to be my absolute favourite. Such a fabulous time to photograph outside with nature in all her superb glory. So an Autumn photoshoot on location is my idea of bliss. Put a cosy jumper on and get outside. Listen to the rustle of the fallen leaves and marvel at the glorious riot of rich hues that the season brings. There is nothing like being outdoors when we hit this magical season. The colours are really like no other and talking to your photographer to ensure you select the best place for the type of images you like is paramount.
Being based in Sussex I am spoilt for choice with outside spaces to showcase the vibrant colours of nature. I have a few favourites and Buchan Park is a real gem. It is only a short walk for little ones and gives great access to some amazing colour. All year round I might add this is definitely a firm favourite of mine. I really love the colours the many ferns turn when they hit autumn. A rich red-brown which I love, almost as much as the yellow and red leaves which fall on the ground.
I also know some great local family walks in beautiful surroundings. Some of which you might not have heard of. So if you feel the need to get outdoors and breathe that clean, crisp autumnal air, you can read about them here.
An outdoor autumn photoshoot is such a great way to capture relaxed, natural images of you and your family. Whether that’s your children or your pets. Or both! The freedom of outside, making it a relaxing experience, especially for little ones with energy to burn. Kicking leaves is a great activity. As is log balancing, puddle jumping and general running around. This all helps to create some fantastic natural images with lots of fun and laughter. Their personalities will shine. There is so much to keep the children entertained that an hour’s portrait session with me goes by super quick. I also make sure I bring along a few extra props to keep you dry if you are sitting on the ground.
This is all about getting out and about and interacting with your children, they love it.
Autumn photoshoots in Sussex aren’t just for families, however. This time of year makes for a gorgeous backdrop for any occasion. Some ladies are brave enough to venture out and about for their maternity session. I always bring a good selection of maternity dresses which complements the season’s colours. Athough this can mean changing clothes in the woods I have plenty of tips and tricks to make it easy. Some of my favourite maternity portraits have been on location and I have also captured gorgeous birth announcement portraits for this lovely couple. Find out why it was so very special in my blog all about their session
The change in season and a slight chill in the air means it’s time to put on a jumper, or hat & scarf. Consequently, this tends to add fabulous textures to the photos. Selecting great outfits that compliment each other are as important as the location itself. Although I know it can be tricky to know what to wear to your session. I am always more than happy to give a little guidance that you can adapt to your personal style. Warm rich tones are just gorgeous when out and about in the woods and a pop of colour always adds something to your portraits. If you are looking for some great examples and inspiration on what to wear, take a look at my Autumn/Winter Pinterest board.
I also often get asked if families can bring along their dogs, the answer is always YES. Dogs are such a big part of families and they enjoy the woods as much as the children. Not only do we capture images of them with you as a family, I also make sure I capture some portraits of them on their own.
But what about the weather?
Well, we do live in the UK after all. Weather is something that seems to rule my life when I have location sessions booked in. I become a Met Office addict. Literally checking the weather daily to see if there are any new changes which may affect your session. Sometimes the worst happens and the heavens open which means a postponement but I am used to this. So don’t worry, just leave that up to me. We always find a new date to suit everyone. Then it is back to keeping everything crossed again that the weather is dry. I think three weather postponements is currently my winning record!
If you are still looking for inspiration to get out and about at this time of year. Whether that be for an Autumn Photoshoot to just to experience this gorgeous season. Take a look at these 11 beautiful autumnal walks in Sussex.
There is something in there for everyone from easily accessible and walkable places such as Sheffield Park through to walks for the more adventurous along Devil Dyke.
Fancy bringing the outdoors in?
Of course, not all autumn photographs can happen outdoors – this is the UK after all. Sometimes it can be far cosier to be inside. Especially when it’s a Cake Smash to celebrate your 1st birthday! In which case, we can easily bring the outdoors indoors. We did just that for one young man’s Autumn Pumpkins-themed smash.
“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers,” – Anne of Green Gables. So am I, Anne, so am I. And not just because it’s my birthday!
