Newborn babies are the most precious thing in the world. Working as a newborn photographer Haywards Heath, I get to meet them most days. Lucky me! As a mother of three children I know there is nothing quite as magical as the first few days of a baby’s life. I adore all types of photography but it’s portraiture that really captures my heart. To take portraits during your baby’s first month is an honour and a joy. It is also an art, involving calming techniques, posing expertise and lots and lots of patience. I have all of these in abundance and use them to ensure you are rewarded with outstanding portraits of your precious little one.
Amelia
This beautiful little lady was 3 weeks old when she came to came to see me in the Samphire studio for her newborn portraits. Just slightly older than my usual newborn clients but she was an absolute dream to photograph.
Newborn sessions usually take place up to 14 days after the birth (5-10 days is the perfect age). During those first two weeks is when they curl up in deep, newborn, sleepy poses, so it gives us maximum opportunity to capture those adorable images. They also tend not too have too many baby spots quite yet. Older babies tend to be more awake, but, as you can clearly see, we can still achieve great images. So don’t worry if your baby falls outside of this age range. Lots of photographers, myself included, work with babies that are slightly older. Although do bear in mind that the older your little one is, and the more awake they may be, it therefore might mean some of the poses may be more difficult to achieve.
Session
For Amelia’s newborn session I chose to use a couple of colour schemes, and I just can’t decide which suited her best. Is it the warm natural brown tones with soft salmon pinks, or is it the cool pastels palette: lilac and mint? What do you think? Adorable Amelia looked angelic in both, and I captured some truly gorgeous images of her for Mum to treasure.
During a newborn portrait session I take lots (and lots!) of images on my camera which I then edit, to give clients their finished gallery. In this particular gallery, some of the images have needed little or no enhancement. Some are a composite (an image made up of several pictures, to ensure baby safety at all times). And some are as a result of using a digital backdrop – just like the wonderful one of Amelia nestled in a round basket surrounded by flowers and petals. I love it so much I decided to use it as the feature image.
You can get all sorts of digital backdrops – ones that can ‘transport’ you to outer space, or cover you in snowflakes! This one, a fabulous purchase from Luisa Dunn, is just perfect for my newborn clients, and little Amelia looks amazing in this image. You can also find them on Luisa’s Facebook page.

Complimentary Session
Remember, all of my full session newborn clients are invited back to the Samphire studio for a complimentary sitter session.
That way I get to see how ‘my’ babies have grown. Plus, this is probably one of my most favourite ages to photograph babies at. At this stage babies may be sitting up or lifting themselves up onto all fours. Bringing opportunities to pose them sitting in our vintage baskets or tin bath tub. These sessions are fun fun fun, and focus on capturing the personality of your little one!
