Working as a newborn photographer Worthing, I have seen babies of all shapes and sizes. The Samphire studio has welcomed them all. And this beautiful baby girl weighed just over 6lb when she was born. So she was still a wee little thing when she came in for her newborn session at 9 days old. But size definitely doesn’t matter when it comes to newborns. More important is age. To maximise the opportunity to capture the sleepy curled up baby poses, newborn sessions most commonly take place up to 14 days after the birth.
So young Grace was at the perfect age, and she was the perfect model. This little lady slept like a trooper. A dream to photograph, I worked through my full complement of poses with Grace including froggy and the womb pose. Froggy is a composite image, an image made up of several images and edited together to look as one. This can often happen with newborn portraits as baby safety is paramount at all times.
The feature image is the side view of froggy and is possibly one of my favourite images to date.
Session
I selected a delicate colour scheme of soft yellows and pinks for her session which suited Grace so well. Soft textures, floral prints, cosy blankets, all combined to give a cohesive mix of images and styles.
I always ask parents in their booking email if they have a preference for which colours to use. Then I can ensure you have the perfect session for you. Most clients leave it up to me to decide, but some have a certain idea in mind. If you have a favourite colour, let me know. Or perhaps you have a colour you particularly want to avoid, again, let me know. Maybe you are thinking ahead to your finished images and already know where there are going to displayed. Gold star for you, I cannot emphasise enough the importance of displaying your images. If you have a specific décor you would like your image to fit in with, then let me use a palette that tones in well. I can tailor the session around your requirement and the session will flow so much smoother if I know in advance.
Flow
When babies come into the studio I always have a pre-planned flow of images to work through. However, this does not always go to plan as all sessions are baby led. So if your little one isn’t a sleeper I just move things around a little, and introduce some other poses instead. This means you will always receive a great varied gallery to select your images from.
And if you can’t chose, just have them all!!! A great way to display – or gift – the images is in a photo book and by purchasing the whole gallery you will have plenty to use.

Complimentary Session
Did you know, all of my full session newborn clients are invited back to the Samphire studio for a complimentary sitter session?
That way I get to see how ‘my’ babies have grown. Plus, this is probably one of my most favourite ages to photograph babies at. At this stage babies may be sitting up or lifting themselves up onto all fours. Bringing opportunities to pose them sitting in our vintage baskets or tin bath tub. These sessions are fun fun fun, and focus on capturing the personality of your little one!
Are all babies born with blue eyes?
Let me tell you what I found out. Fact or folklore? Read about it here.

As a mother of three children I know there is nothing more magical than the first few days of a baby’s life. I adore all types of photography but it’s portraiture that really captures my heart. To take portraits during your baby’s first month is an honour and a joy. It is also an art involving calming techniques, posing expertise and lots and lots of patience. I have all of these in abundance and use them to ensure you are rewarded with outstanding portraits of your little one.
