When mum-to-be Sarah contacted me and asked if I offer maternity and newborn session and please could she book, of course I said yes. When she then went on to mention that she would prefer an outdoor session my reaction was one of definite excitement. Most of my maternity sessions take place in my relaxing home studio, where there is a selection of dresses to change into and use throughout the session. This brave and beautiful Mum, however, wanted to have her session outdoors and so after agreeing on a location, bringing along a selection of dresses as well as my assistant Karen, we embarked on a fantastic few outfits out in the woods at Buchan Park . It is a stunning space and one which I have visited often with my own children and as a location it is gorgeous.
The light that day was amazing, it was lovely, warm and soft, plus Karen was on hand to help diffuse any unwanted rays of light that might spoil the image. Although a little chilly it didn’t stop this intrepid Mum from making full use of the dresses I brought along on the day, and with the use of some very large blankets to ensure everyone’s modesty remained intact, we captured a fabulous gallery of images that is truly unique to her. So, if you’re feeling brave and would like to recreate something similar then please get in touch and I can talk you through how it all works.
Sarah’s intrepidness didn’t stop there, however, as I knew when she brought her baby boy, her second I may add, into the studio for his newborn portrait session she was also keen to head out to the great outdoors to capture an image of her newborn son in a woodland setting. Again, great excitement for me.
Very aptly named baby Heath came in to the Samphire studio when he was 12 days old with his whole family and here are some of my favourite images from the session. Big brother, River, was also a dream to photograph and I especially like the image of the two boys together….even if the book if upside down…..who cares when you are 1 1/2!
So after the majority of the images were taken in the studio we headed out with Heath dressed in one of my super warm rompers, kindly knitted by a friend’s Mum (thanks Sue. x). Being in Britain, our weather isn’t always the most reliable or warm, even in the late Spring, and my priority is always to ensure that your little ones are safe at all times and making sure that they are not too cold, or too hot, is definitely one of them. Heath was a superstar however and stayed asleep in order for me to safely pose him back onto his hands in my little woodland trunk bowl, which fitted in perfectly with the overall outdoors theme, and left us all with a warm feeling as we watched this precious little boy sleeping in the woods.
A big thank you to Heath’s Mum for making her whole maternity and newborn session such an enjoyable adventure.
