Congratulations and welcome. If you are reading this information on my behind the scenes of a newborn session then you are more than likely considering a newborn session for your little one.
Newborn sessions are not something that many people are familiar with. So let’s take a look at what really happens so that you have a little more knowledge of how the process works.
My newborn sessions take place when your little one is up to a month old, but more often than not in the first two weeks. Once booked in, the date is confirmed when your little one finally puts in an appearance. Throughout the booking process, I will send you information on what to bring on the day and how to prepare.
Once here at the Samphire studios you get to sit back and relax, as I have a lovely selection of refreshments available for you.
Then the magic begins…
AAAAND RELAX – whilst we begin the behind the scenes of a newborn session tour
Once your little one has a full tummy, more often than not your session will start with poses on my posing beanbag. This gives you, baby and me time to get to know each other. For your newborn this will all be a new experience, with new smells, sounds and touch so this time spent at the beginning of the session will ensure that they are happy throughout. It also gives me time to get your little one used to being touched and moved and to read their little signs of what they do and do not like. All my sessions are baby led, so I make sure that I am not doing anything that may unsettle them.
Once on the beanbag and all settled, I work through a variety of poses with smooth transitions to capture a variety of images for you whilst keeping your baby super close and fast asleep. The studio is kept toasty warm to ensure your baby’s temperature is maintained. I watch your baby throughout to make sure that they are not getting too hot or too cold. Although we maybe feel a tad warm, your newborn won’t be wearing any clothes at this stage and newborn babies find it very difficult to regulate their body temperature. I also photograph on a wide lens which means that I work super close to the beanbag, keeping your baby safe at all times.
TIME FOR SOME WRAPPING
Boy, do babies love a swaddle. So as I am coming to the end of photographing your images on the beanbag I will swaddle your baby and move on to images using some of my many props. If we need to stop for an additional feed that is not a problem. As I have mentioned before I always listen to what your baby needs throughout your time at the Samphire studios.
This is where I introduce other colours and textures into your session and work through additional poses with your baby.
When parents come in for a newborn session, they often say that,
“they are worried their baby might cry or not sleep for their newborn session”
Well, this is also where swaddling comes into its own. For really unsettled babies a swaddle is sure to help. It can help calm babies by imitating touch. It also stops the startle reflex all babies have and it helps keeps their hands out of the way. So even if your baby is wide awake I can still capture amazing images for you all.
Just leave it all up to me and you are sure to end up enjoying your newborn experience with Samphire Photography.
Do I ever forget about Siblings and Parents?
Definitely not as I feel these are just as important as the portraits of your little one on their own. If I have any siblings who come along, I often schedule these for the beginning of the session when your children are at their freshest. As the session is often long they can sometimes struggle towards the end. Parent poses are then included either at the beginning or end depending on if siblings are present. More often than not parents love and want sibling poses but can be less keen to be in the picture themselves. I always encourage at least one portrait however as these images are not just your memories but they are your newborn’s memories too.
So if you haven’t yet booked in then just head over to my newborn page which has its own online booking link which is super easy.
