Newborn baby photography is a real skill. And when you have a sibling along for the session this can also be challenging, especially when there is a small age gap between the siblings. Not so in the case of baby Porter and his one year old sister, Romy.
Romy had visited me for her newborn session just the year before, after her Mum had been given a gift voucher at her baby shower. So, when baby number 2 was on the way the same friend contacted me again to purchase another gift voucher for them. How lovely.
Sibling images
I always photograph the children separately, if there is a close age gap between the siblings, and then put the images together when I edit. I do this primarily for safety, as young children tend not to be that spatially aware. An unintentional knock to a prop that their sibling is in could mean an accident. And we definitely wouldn’t want that. Sometimes the challenge can also be in getting the sibling to pose on their own, but little Romy was a star. And as you can see from one of the final gallery images, she nailed it.
After I capture sibling images I then go on to focus on the newborn. This leaves Mum and Dad free to play with the other children. This is a time which they love, as it means they have their total attention back…well for a few hours at least!
Gorgeous Porter was as good as his big sister. His feature image above, where he is smiling, is one of my favourite images ever. Just look at his beaming sleepy smile. I opted for a mix of blues and browns for his session and little Porter slept like a baby, literally! He woke just at the end of the session. This meant I was able to capture the awake shot seen below in my selection of favourites.

Did you know, all my full session newborn clients are invited back to the Samphire studio for a complimentary sitter session? That way I get to see how ‘my’ babies have grown. Plus, this is probably one of my most favourite ages to photograph babies at. At this stage babies may be sitting up or lifting themselves up onto all fours. Consequently bringing opportunities to pose them sitting in our vintage baskets or tin bath tub. These sessions are fun, and focus on capturing the personality of your little one!
